Junior Noah Only: the life of a two-sport athlete

By Shane McGuine

In the Only house, it is very early in the morning when an alarm rings. Junior Noah Only is waking up for an early morning workout. Only is a two-sport athlete, playing football in the fall and basketball in the winter.

In football, he is a linebacker. In the past, he has played as a wide receiver and running back for previous teams. For basketball, he plays as more of a forward for the high school, but during his travel season, he plays a combo guard. He started his basketball career in second grade and he started his football career in fifth grade.

He comes from a very athletic family, his older brother Bryce playing division one baseball, and his sister Kendal doing division one track as well. His goal is to also go to college for either basketball or football. His younger brother Jacob also plays basketball and football.

Only has played sports for almost all of his life and for a variety of teams ranging all the way out in Chicago.

“You don’t get to play sports forever so give it your all until you can’t anymore,” Only said.

He is only going to be a teenager for a limited time so he is trying to make the most of his time being young while he can and taking advantage of all the opportunities given to him.

“He was persistent and he did it,” Noah’s mother, Tracy Only said.

She is referring to when he ran track he had to run the 400-meter race, which he did not want to do, but he persevered and gave his best effort. This is one of his many traits that make Only a great athlete, but a great person too.

“He is a very compassionate and caring person especially with the family,” Only said.

The Only family is very close and also very competitive in sports. According to Tracy one of the reasons that he joined the basketball team was to try and be better than Bryce. Tracy is extremely proud and prideful of Noah and his siblings’ accomplishments, and how they are respectful and she enjoys seeing them succeed so much in sports, especially due to the amount of time that they put into training.

She will always be there to encourage him to love himself, be respectful, and stay away from negative things.
