“Joker: Folie à Deux, sequel to Warner Bros 2019 “Joker,” arrived to theaters on Oct. 4.
The film presents failed comedian Arthur Fleck, better known as the “Joker.” As he works his way through his murder trial, Fleck meets the supposed love of his life, Harley Quinn.
What I can say is… not great. It was overwhelmingly long, had far too much singing, an undeveloped plot, and was an overall unnecessary sequel to an already great movie.
Despite its graphic violence and disturbing nature, the original “Joker” was a beautiful movie. Its message of society and mental illness was gorgeous, leaving the audience not only stunned, but touched.
It was a box office success, grossing over $1 billion. Frankly, it could have been left at that. It certainly did not need a sequel. However, that is what we got.
The sequel, starring Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga, was extremely unnecessary. The plot was already weak, but it was stretched out so much to the point of being boring. Not only that, but the amount of singing in the movie became unbearable.
“Joker” never should have been turned into a musical. It is so far off from what the movie is about, it is laughable. The movie just seemed to drag on and on, to the point where I was just going to close my eyes and fall asleep.
Not only this, but in the original movie, they gave Bruce Wayne, also known as Batman, interacting with his future archnemesis, Joker. In the sequel, however, he was not shown again. It made no sense to even include him in the first movie if they were not going to allude to him in the sequel.
Moreover, they just killed Arthur Fleck off in the end. That was so stupid on so many levels. Isn’t this movie supposed to be Joker’s backstory? And they just killed him? That was probably the most ridiculous and confusing ending. It was not even a good death; some random guy just stabbed him.
It feels like they were just trying to finish the movie quickly. The plot was so bad they likely could not have come up with a better ending.
It was extremely disappointing to see another beautiful movie be turned into an unnecessary and boring sequel. However, I will give the movie credit in that its stage pictures were gorgeous. The lighting, the sets, and the poses were all appealing to the eye and interesting to watch.
However, the plot was just too weak and unstable. The best advice I can give is that if you are a fan of the original movie, the sequel is a waste of your money and time.
