On Jan. 17, Mac Miller’s final album, “Balloonerism” was released. Mac Miller was known for his heartfelt music and his passion-filled lyrics. Unfortunately, he passed away in 2018 due to an overdose. The latest album was released after compiling his work right before he died.
One thing about Mac Miller that is heavily cherished is his ability to tell stories within his songs.
“’Balloonerism’ felt like reconnecting with an old friend, making jokes, and catching up on life,” senior Cayden Haugh said.
This makes each word hit on a deeper level and has the true meaning of the music resonate on a deeper level.
To the more dedicated fans, this last piece was to close out the chapter of his life.
Many speculate that this album was planned before his death. Miller was known to struggle with drug abuse and addiction. Over the course of the album, he relives his life before finally ending up in the final moments. He essentially goes on a trip but gets too high.
The purpose behind a balloon is that when it goes too high, it pops. This means that he was trying to convey that the addiction overtook him and he got too high before overdosing and sadly passing.
Although this is more of a sad story, each song is still great to listen to.
“My favorite song on the album was ‘5 Dollar Pony Rides’ because it has good lyricism mixed with a fast instrumental,” senior Mason Leske said.
Each song carries its own message for the audience, and it leaves a different impact on every person. That is truly the beauty of the art of music.
Even on the surface level, without the deeper meaning behind the album, the songs are appreciated.
“I think this was a really nice album and it was nice to see,” senior Daniel Przybylko said. “I didn’t know he was releasing, but this album could become the best of the year.”
This was a great release from Mac Miller, and will likely help him go down in history as one of the greats.
