The highly anticipated video game sequel to “Hollow Knight,” “Hollow Knight: Silksong,” is a recently released 2D animated adventure delving into a world of hunters, beasts, monsters, and knights by indie games developer Team Cherry.
Players of the prequel had been patiently waiting for its release, as it was first announced as early as 2019.
The main protagonist, hunter Hornet, fights foes throughout many meticulously designed domains in search of answers amidst her capture in the magical world of Pharloom.
First introduced as a side character in the prequel, Hornet, the princess and protector of Hallownest, makes her debut as the game’s playable character and navigates a complex storyline, attempting to not only find the truth about her capture but also her mysterious origin.
She makes her journey to the Citadel’s peak, piecing the puzzle together along the way while combating foes leading up to Grand Mother Silk, a deity set on controlling the kingdom and its bug-like inhabitants.
Silk and song entangle themselves in the game as Pharloom’s culture and society seemingly worship music, and much of the environment and storyline revolves around musical aspects, as well as silk being a physical and abstract symbol of power.
Hornet’s weapon, a needle and thread, is used against enemies while a plague named The Haunting is spread by Grand Mother Silk through threads of silk.
The game’s soundtrack, created by award-winning composer Christopher Larkin, sets the tone for the musical adventure as players get an expanded view of the original world pre-established and pre-loved in “Hollow Knight.” Player satisfaction with the prequel was, in fact, so high that the anticipation for “Silksong” remained persistent throughout the six-year waiting period.
Once it was finally released, a popular website for buying and launching video games, “Steam,” completely crashed due to the sheer traction brought by those purchasing the game on it. Many games, such as “Demonschool” and “Babysteps” even delayed their own releases for fear of being overshadowed by the game.
“Hollow Knight: Silksong” continues its prequel’s highly regarded legacy and invites players to join a new world in which they can battle and untangle the web carefully woven by Team Cherry.
