“The Quarry,” developed by Supermassive Games, is a horror drama. It utilizes cinematic gameplay where the player’s choice will determine the story, along with the skill-based quick-time events.
The gameplay tends to be roughly eight to ten hours to get through the main story; however, with about 186 unique endings, a player could spend countless hours playing over and over again.
The story starts with two camp counselors making their way through forest-enclosed roads, as they are traveling to Hacket’s Quarry Summer Camp a night early.
Laura and Max are struggling to navigate the winding streets at night and end up getting lost. A crouching tall creature appears in the road the second Max looks away, and in order to avoid hitting it, he swerves off into the woods.
The couple exits the car in order to analyze the damage. While Max fixes up his car, Laura makes her way into the forest to investigate a sound she heard that she believes is from the woman they almost hit.
As she makes her way on the path, she finds clues and a poster about the Harum Scarum, a traveling freak show. Out of nowhere, the ghostly woman appears behind Laura and gives her a fright. Laura races back to Max as the two pile into the car that is now working, but stuck in the mud and still unable to move.
A mysterious cop approaches Max’s window and questions the two teenagers. He helps them get back onto the road and tries to persuade them to go to the Harbinger Motel for the night. After the cop leaves, Laura and Max continue to make their way to Hacket’s Quarry against the cop’s wishes.
The campground seems to be empty except for someone trapped in the storm shelter that is locked. Laura is motivated to help the prisoner out and breaks open the door to go down and rescue them.
While she is wandering around finding more startling facts about this place, Max gets attacked by a beast and is left on the ground bleeding out. The player’s decision can determine if Laura helps Max out of the storm shelter. Just as she is out, a needle, from the hands of the sheriff, glides into her neck, injecting a sedative.
This is just a glimpse into the prologue of this jaw-dropping creation. The game can go on to have ten more chapters along with an epilogue; however, one’s journey can quickly come to an end if you make the wrong choice.
The game is more than just scares, as it brings together an incredible story with humor, drama, and surprising twists around every corner.
Jump in and help guide nine camp counselors through the most terrifying and important night of their lives. As the sun goes down on the day after the last day of camp, they must decide how to survive against new monsters they’ve never experienced and the haunting neighbors that seem to be always watching.
