An ideal world, to some, might look like harmony amongst all species in one space, with their differences celebrated. These differences might even be fluffy tails versus razor-sharp teeth or a love for carrots versus an insatiable thirst for meat.
“Zootopia 2,” the animated sequel film released on Nov. 26, highlights the problems encountered when trying to achieve this utopia.
The film follows protagonists Judy Hopps and Nick Wilde, an unexpected bunny and fox crime-fighting duo, as they work through their assigned police case with a newly introduced exotic companion.
The prequel originally narrates Judy’s journey from a small-town farm to Zootopia, in hopes of becoming a police officer. She crosses paths with deviant, sly, con artist Nick while working on a case in which normally calm predators begin acting savagely, leading to fatal attacks.
Tensions rise between predator and prey animals as prey start to become highly suspicious of any and all predators, raising concerns of species prejudice and discrimination. However, Nick and Judy eventually solve the mysterious case and are promoted to partner officers in the end, advocating for and modeling species co-existence.
The same themes are present in the sequel, where a new character, Gary De’Snake, an ambassador for faraway reptile cities, works alongside Nick and Judy to crack down who has been wreaking havoc and possibly tampering with a new initiative to integrate reptiles into mammal-only Zootopia.
As evidence seems to point to Gary, Nick and Judy form opposing views and eventually split up to investigate separately. The two partners’ disagreement, as well as their overall relationship, is explored in the movie with some potential hints at a romantic connection, but is overall kept ambiguous while still showcasing natural ups and downs.
Advertising for the film also seemed to insinuate a romantic storyline sought by many fans, but nothing was explicitly stated.
The investigation ensues dangerous, thrilling adventures; the culprit is finally caught once Nick and Judy convene and share their findings. Reptiles are soon welcomed, and Zootopia’s harmony is restored.
Despite being a light-hearted movie, “Zootopia 2” touches on important topics such as discrimination and prejudice, with an underlying message of acceptance. Viewers of all ages can take these lessons to heart, all while being immersed in a suspenseful, humorous storyline.
