St. Vincent” is a dramedy written and directed by Theodore Melfi. The film stars Bill Murray and Melissa McCarthy as neighbors Vincent and Maggie.

Maggie is a single mother who moves in next door to Vincent along with her young son Oliver. The two get off to a bad start immediately when the movers Maggie hired inadvertently destroy Vincent’s fence and rip a branch off a tree in his yard.

Times are tough for Maggie and Oliver, causing Maggie to work crazy hours and leaving Oliver alone most of the time. An incident at school where the other boys steal Oliver’s phone and house keys leads to him spending the afternoon at Vincent’s until his mother gets home from work.

Maggie finally arrives to pick up Oliver and, not surprisingly, Vincent demands payment for his hours spent as a ‘babysitter.’

This leads to Vincent ‘babysitting’ Oliver every day after school and the two eventually form a close bond.

“St. Vincent” is a hilarious, yet heartwarming movie that is made all the better by Murray’s amazing performance as Vincent. Murray’s performance is truly the best part about this movie.

Other honorable mentions include Melissa McCarthy and Jaeden Lieberher. It was refreshing to see McCarthy cast in her role as single mother Maggie because it is so much different than the roles she usually takes. Despite being outside of her comfort zone, McCarthy gave a believable and real performance as Oliver’s disgruntled mother.

Oliver, or Lieberher, also deserves recognition. He did an amazing job as Oliver, especially for an actor so young and new to Hollywood.

The film is a typical “old man befriends young boy and grows a soft spot for him” cliché and follows the traditional plot of that cliché, but the movie is saved by Bill Murray’s outrageous character.
