‘Hot Tub Time Machine 2’ fails at pleasing high expectations

Imagine a world filled with smart cars that drive themselves, vulgar game shows with no limits, and a hot tub that also functions as a time machine.

‘Hot Tub Time Machine 2’ was released on Feb. 20. Being a fan of ‘Hot Tub Time Machine’, I had high expectations for the sequel. Unfortunately, I was disappointed to the point where I considered walking out at some parts. Director Steve Pink should have stopped at the first movie.

In the first movie, life long friends Lou, Nick, Adam, and his nephew Jacob, are accidentally sent back to the ‘80s. Realizing that the universe is giving him a chance to change his life, Lou uses his knowledge of the present to get rich. He eventually invents Lougle and becomes the main singer for Motley Lou.

The movie starts off with a party at Lou’s house. Everyone is having a great time until Lou gets shot by someone amidst the crowd. Nick, Jacob, and Lou attempt using the hot tub to go back in time and prevent Lou from getting shot. However, they are sent to the future.

Adam (John Cusack) is not in this movie, with the exception of flashbacks and a picture that the other characters keep referring to. Instead, his son Adam Jr. Joins the guys in finding Lou’s Murderer.

“Though it’s always nice to see what the future might hold,” said Aaron Dicer, writer for yourmoviefriend.com, “No amount of gadgetry could save this juvenile mess from being anything more than an unfunny parade of gross out jokes and confusing plot movements.”

Like any other time travel movie I’ve seen, the plot is confusing and hard to follow. It ran parallel to the first movie, making some parts predictable. There were a few hilariously inappropriate scenes, but the rest of the jokes made them seem like they were trying too hard.

“It’s just another lazy and uninspired sequel and a complete waste of time,” said Travis Hopson, writer for examiner.com.

Overall, I give this movie 2 out of 5 stars due to the few genuinely funny scenes and cool futuristic elements.
