The sequel to 2012s ‘Pitch Perfect’ came out on Friday, May 15. The film featured all of the previous cast members from the first one, most famously Anna Kendrick and Rebel Wilson.

The movie started with the Barden Bellas in trouble when Fat Amy accidentally shows her private parts to the entire crowd during the performance for the president’s birthday.

This causes them to end up in a difficult competition that no American team has even won before. However, before they can do that, they must band together and “find their sound” again.

That’s it. That’s the plot.

For the record, I loved the first ‘Pitch Perfect.’ It was funny, entertaining, and the songs were wonderful. The writing was great and it kept me engaged the entire movie. Its unnecessary sequel was mediocre at best.

The original movie was an amazing piece of film that should have been left alone. The sequel that has insisted on being dragged along behind it is an embarrassment to the entire franchise.

I feel as if the script to this movie was the first draft that no one ever bothered to edit. There were hardly any good jokes and even Fat Amy’s one-liners could not save it.

There is also an introduction of a freshman named Emily (Steinfeld) who has a desire to join the Bellas, especially because her mother was one during her time in college. I am honestly so confused about this character. Why was she included?

Emily added absolutely nothing to the plot, other than helping the protagonist Beca with a problem later in the movie and having a weird flirtatious thing with an awkward male a capella member. There was absolutely no reason for this character to be there.

What made it worse was that the poor girl was so embarrassing that I cringed every time she showed up on screen. She was so obnoxious and clearly trying too hard and it made me uncomfortable watching her.

There were a few redeeming parts about this movie, however. The musical performances, which of course were not as good as the original’s, were still solid and fun to watch. The only other thing I adored was the cameo by Keegan Michael Key who nailed his role, just as he does with every other role he has been in.

If you loved the original ‘Pitch Perfect,’ do not see its embarrassing sequel. It will be a waste of your time and money, and ruin the good image you have in your head of the Bellas.
