It was the end of our days of relaxation and freedom, so my dad decided to take me and my brother out to Sunday brunch at Burnt Toast. Our highly-anticipated long weekend ended in a high, delicious note.
The line, as expected on a Sunday afternoon, stretched past the front doors and into the parking lot. Which is why were shocked when we were told that our wait time was going to be half an hour at the most.
I did not believe it at first, but I soon started to realize that we had arrived at the perfect time. Everybody was wrapping up their meal and leaving the restaurant by the time we got our buzzer. It only took 20 minutes until our waitress sat in is a comfy booth right by the bar.
Since we have already eaten at the restaurant before, we knew exactly what we wanted. The only difference was that it was my first time eating at the Burnt Toast in Algonquin. They may have the same name and menu, but they sure are not the same inside.
The Burnt Toast in Algonquin was more modern and contemporary with its setting and decor, while the restaurant in Elgin’s decor gave off the warm, make yourself-at-home vibe. This one reminded me more of a coffee shop, and the one Elgin reminded me more of grandma’s house.
Nevertheless, both restaurants offered the same quality and quantity of delicious brunch classics. We ordered the Veggie Skillet, French Omelette, and their monthly special, Very Berry stuffed French Toast.
The only problem with our food was that they were fresh out of the stuffed french toast my dad had ordered, the one downside of showing up at the time that we did. The waitress, however, was kind of enough to help him pick out an alternative that is just as good as what he intended on getting.
When our food finally arrived, we were all ready to dive in.
The goat cheese in the French Omelette complemented the spinach and sun-dried tomatoes, giving it a Mediterranean twist. The crispiness of the hash browns tied the whole dish together.
The regular stuffed french toast was a great alternative to the Very Berry French Toast. Our waitress even gave us strawberry sauce to give it a “very berry” taste anyways. The toasts were fluffy, golden-brown, and the strawberry sauce was the icing on the cake (almost literally).
It was my first time ordering a Veggie Skillet, so I was not sure if I was going to like it. When I took my first bite, I should have known that Burnt Toast, as always, does not fail to impress.
Underneath the soft layer of creamy, bright yellow scrambled eggs was an explosion of fresh veggies cooked to perfection. A combination of every veggie I can think of (green bell peppers, spinach, broccoli, mushrooms, just to name a few), the skillet was filling but definitely satisfying.
Leaving the restaurant, I realized that our brunch was just like how our long weekend had been: beyond enjoyable at first, a little bit sluggish towards the end, but definitely satisfying overall.
