A “trance” that is what she calls it.
A combination of dancing, singing, and daydreaming.
She experiences it everyday, it is how she expresses herself.
Alexis McFarlin is a senior at Huntley High School and for four years she has gone through the daily routine every student goes through.
Except she is different.
Alexis McFarlin dances, she does not walk in the halls. Alexis McFarlin sings, she does not stay quiet during silent study hall.
Alexis McFarlin daydreams the hours away.
She paces in the halls, dodging and swerving through the crowds of high school students while singing along to a tune harmonizing from her iPod.
She is aware of the odd looks she receives from students in the halls.
She is aware that some students criticize her for being peculiar.
She knows. She is aware. She just chooses not to care since it has became a part of who she is.
She has been the “girl who is all ways singing” as long as she can remember.
Her mother says she could sing before she could talk.
Her father says she began to pace after her first steps.
Throughout her toddler years she continued to sing and run, lost in her own thoughts. While her parents observed her the concern for her well being increased.
Visits to numerous doctors followed. All swore she had a condition but after a long line of medical tests and procedures. They found nothing.
Her elementary teachers believed she was emotionally unstable only because she sang in class and galloped around the classroom.
Fighting people’s rejection against her true self is a constant battle for Alexis McFarlin.
Only she knows she will fight for the rest of her life because she will never stop singing, pacing, or daydreaming.
They make her who she is.
