Is Godspell the right choice?

By Sarah Christenson

Seats are to be filled from April 20th to the 22nd with the intent to see the next high school musical. This next musical has been chosen by Mrs. Taxon, Huntley High School’s choir teacher. It will be Godspell which is the telling of different lessons from The Gospel according to Mathew.

Based on what the musical is about, I wasn’t really sure if this was the best choice for Huntley’s next show. Mrs. Taxon goes on to explain that, “religious people don’t like it because they don’t think it’s accurate. Some non-religious people don’t like it because they think it’s too religious.”

“I wanted a show that would highlight multiple people’s skills. So Godspell is what you can call an ensemble show. There’s not really a leading person” Mrs. Taxon explained.

I can see both sides of the musical. I understand that Mrs. Taxon wants to give her students and those who try out the chance to have their own highlights. I think that is a great idea. If this is the best music for that, then that is great for her students. On the other hand, it seems like a very different musical choice. If leads were not the primary concern, I think a different musical would be better for a high school musical.

“It’s a very odd musical. I think it was a very different choice. We would get an email every now and [then]. It’s like,  “’Hey guys. We don’t know what this is [going to] look like.’ So we are going to basically improv it” Junior Zachary Barnvos explains. Senior Olivia Zak goes on to explain that “we get to kind of just play around with the script and make it our own. There isn’t fully a set thing that we’re doing.” It’s exciting to not really know what Mrs. Taxon will come up with. They are able to really customize the musical.
